Work Strategies for Doctoral Students

Description

Doing a doctorate or PhD means acquiring a series of knowledge and tools to become an independent researcher. This implies, in addition to knowing in depth the state of the art, methods and procedures of a particular area of study, understanding the scientific process itself. That is, how do we demonstrate the new knowledge resulting from our research, how do we justify its social relevance, how do we disseminate it to academic peers and society in general, or how do we incorporate this new knowledge in the training of new professionals and researchers.

This process of “becoming an independent researcher” generally lasts 4 years, under a mentoring system by supervisors. Although in doctoral programs it is usual to find doctoral courses on research methodologies, scientific writing and research topics specific to the area of study; There are few programs that incorporate soft skills and work strategies as part of the training. These soft skills, such as time management, stress management, response to reviewers, relationship with supervisors or work-family balance, are essential for adequate performance during doctoral training.

This course seeks to explore and put into practice a series of soft skills and work strategies that will not only facilitate the transition to "becoming an independent researcher", but will also accompany researchers for life. For this reason, in this course the key skills have been selected to favor and ensure progress in their scientific training.

Objectives and methodology

Explore and apply a series of soft tools and work strategies as an accompaniment to the training of doctoral students.

Specific objectives

  • Know a series of soft tools and work strategies for doctoral students.
  • Reflect on previous strategies and identify priority strategies to facilitate the doctorate process.
  • Motivate the implementation of priority strategies.

Methodology

The virtual classroom methodology will use synchronous and asynchronous interactions. The synchronous sessions will be carried out through the zoom tool and will consist of:

  • Explanations of the most common strategies for the different selected topics.
  • Space for individual and collective reflections on the current strategies of the participants, compared to those shown in the course.
  • Individual reflection to identify priority strategies.
  • Collaborative interactions to promote and strengthen a collaborative and shared learning community. To do this, parallel room tools, interactive questionnaires and collaborative discussion panels will be used.

The asynchronous sessions will consist of readings and guided activities to achieve the autonomous work of the module. Autonomous work will consist of selecting a group of soft skills or prioritized work strategies that you want to incorporate into your daily routine and habits, and the experience of putting them into practice will be recorded.
