Urban Spatial Analysis and Space Syntax

Description

This course provides knowledge of the theory and principles of urban spatial analysis, based on the latest technological trends of the XNUMXst century of big data and artificial intelligence. Study and apply spatial syntax techniques in GIS geographic information systems as a foundation for developing rigorous methods that can be applied to urban environment research questions and design problems at multiple scales, from city to neighborhood.

In the case of students, despite not being a mandatory requirement, this program is suggested so that they have a base of knowledge in GIS programs such as QGIS or ARCGIS, encouraging them to combine qualitative methods with quantitative descriptive methods of analysis, to provide data-driven responses to problems related to the urban and built environment. It also provides an introduction to the basics of online open information and computer programming through simple material related to urban spatial analysis. covers the theory of
computing, providing an easy introduction to a Python programming language.

The course focuses on how to make use of these tools presented to be able to access urban information present in an open way on the internet and make use of it for urban-architectural projects for smart and sustainable city projects.

Objectives and methodology

Objective

The subject will aim to teach students and professionals how to use urban spatial analysis through spatial syntax techniques and programming to support their research and designs in the urban-architectural environment to meet the needs and challenges of future smart cities Ecuadorian, Latin American and worldwide.

Specific objectives

  • Understand the basic principles of spatial analysis and Space Syntax.
  • Being able to carry out a critical analysis of the city using the specialized methodologies and software of Syntax of Space.
  • Access and manipulate open online Big Data information, both urban and from other sources.
  • Introduce students and professionals in the area to the wide variety of existing digital urban environment analysis methods.

Course methodology

Different theoretical-practical investigations will be carried out which will be didactic, since they will be able to make use of these current technologies for the deep and rapid analysis of urban environments in their student and professional life.

The first module will assess participants' understanding of what spatial analysis is and the benefits by presenting a summary of research from a local or global benchmark for spatial analysis.

The second module will evaluate a micro study using space syntax technologies to understand mobility patterns in an urban sector and how to improve them, which will be presented visually and in writing, providing participants with theoretical and practical knowledge.

The third module will assess the understanding of the

open urban information through a practical exercise in which the

Participants will obtain a set of open urban land use data by

Python programming language medium.

Finally, in the fourth module, an integral work of spatial analysis will be carried out through a visual, quantitative and qualitative analysis of land uses and their relationship with the configuration in the city, mapping them in a way that is visually attractive for professionals and others. city actors.
