About this course

The Andes are characterized by presenting a wide variety of ecosystems and plant formations, which are home to a large number of taxa. The high Andean flora is one of the most diverse on the planet, both in its taxonomy and in life forms and characteristics. The plants of forests, moors and valleys are particularly important in the water cycle, since the vegetation cover guarantees their slow descent towards valleys and cities.
This course focuses on the main botanical families, their characteristics, and offers tools for their taxonomic determination. It is an exciting course, aimed at biology professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, and those passionate about our native flora.

Objectives

Study of representative plant families of high Andean forests.

Specific objectives

Recognize representative plant families of high Andean forests and their botanical characters.

ODS

Sustainable development goals

Life of terrestrial ecosystems

Methodology

Talks will be given on the representative plant families of the high Andean forests through an explanation of characters for their recognition and their study of fresh material in the classroom. Students will study and draw important morphological characters, using hand-held magnifying glasses or a microscope. Each student will receive a guide to high Andean plant genera.

One day will be a trip to the field to recognize the plants in their natural habitat (student must dress appropriately, bring their snack and water).

Presentations will be made about the flora and conservation of the Andean forests.
